                                                  JANUARY 2010

You may access this on our website:lakewoodheights.nbed.nb.ca

Dear Parents,

Welcome back. We have lots of snow in the yard and we just want to remind you that students need to have the proper clothing for going out at recess and lunch. Students need snow pants, hats and mitts. We ask you to do us a really big favour and put your child’s name in their snow pants as all the snow pants look the same and when they go missing it is easy to locate them.

ROMERO HOUSE- Our Christmas concert was a huge success. We were able to give Romero House a cheque for $1270.85. They really appreciated this donation from us.

FAMILY TIME- Families that play together develop wonderful communication skills. Try to set aside some time each week to play a family game together. We are all so busy that we don’t always make time to do something together. Take the time as it can make a difference in the long run and provides an opportunity to know your child better.

HOME AND SCHOOL- The next Home and School meeting is on Thursday, January 14th at 7 pm. All parents are welcome to join us at the meeting.

PSSC- The next PSSC meeting will be held on MONDAY, JANUARY 18th at 7 PM.

SKATING: Please note the following schedule: Note: Helmets must be worn.

 Skating- Allaby, 2 /3 Porter, Edwards- Jan 14, 21,28

            Ervin/ Barsalou – February 4, 11th and 18th

            Manley( Buckley)/ Patterson- February 25, March 11, 18

MILK- Please send in $ 9.00  milk money by January 27th  for the month of February.

HOT LUNCH -  We will no longer be offering macaroni and this will be changed to Hamburger Macaroni.

HOMEWORK TIPS- We are beginning a new year and it is always good to think about how we can help our children. Reading, Writing and Math are very important subjects in school. Listening to your child read everyday or even reading to your child can make a huge difference in their success. While in the car asking math questions can strengthen math skills. Anything you can do to help your child grow makes a difference. Thank you for all that you do.

STORM DAYS and LATE BUSSES- Please listen to the radio in the morning as late busses are announced as soon as the information is available. School cancellation is usually made by 6 AM. Sometimes school is closed part way through the day. This is a “nightmare” for us. Please discuss with your child where they would go if they went home early and you were not there. We try to contact parents but this is not always possible. If you have had an address change or a new phone number since September, please provide this to the teacher or the secretary. It is very important that you provide us with this information so we can update our records.

READ-A-THON- We are going to have a Read-A-Thon next month from February 1 – February 5th. This is strictly voluntary however our goal is to promote literacy through reading. Participants commit to read a minimum of 100 minutes over a five day period. This is an average of 20 minutes per day. Students collect pledges from family and friends. The school earns 50% of all pledges collected to purchase library bound books and the students earn book points to select from a vast offering of paperback and or library bound books for their personal book collection. More information will follow in the next few weeks.

DISTRICT EDUCATION “TOWN HALL” MEETINGS  The District Education Council for School District 8 will be hosting a series of "Education Town Halls" early in the new year.

The purpose will be to gather feedback from our various stakeholder groups on past successes, areas that may require some attention, and the general direction District 8 should be taking going forward. We will be looking for input from PSSCs, the business community, advocacy groups, elected officials, parents, and interested community members.

Meetings : River Valley School on Jan 14th, Havelock on Feb 11, Bayside Middle  on Feb 25, St. Malachy’s on March 11 and PES on March 25th

Please feel free to attend any of the above meetings.

Thank you for understanding about this matter. Macaroni and Cheese may not be offered after Christmas as not many students are ordering this now. This is just a reminder that schools may be closed on stormy days. Please listen to the radio, as announcements to that effect will be made on all local radio stations beginning at 6:30. Please be on the alert for this. Also it may be necessary to close schools early during the day. In case this should happen please make certain that your child knows where to go should they arrive home early and find that you are not there. This is very important that you have a discussion regarding this matter. School was closed during the day once last year so please make sure your child understands what they are to do if this happens.

The annual Christmas Concert will be held on Wednesday, December 16th.

There will be two performances so that we accommodate all the parents and grandparents. The first show will start at 9 and the other at 10:30. K-2 parents will attend at 9 and 3-5 at 10:30. We are asking that you give a donation at the door, which will be given directly to Romero House.

All schools have their own Emergency Plan. We have two evacuation areas arranged should we ever have to vacate the school. We practice a Fire Drill once a month and we have a designated area where all students meet with their teachers. This month we will be practicing a “lock down.” We do not want to have any child upset by this but all schools are asked to practice this in the event that one must take place. Basically we are asking the students to gather in one corner of the room all together. It may be helpful if you discuss this with your child. Thank you very much for your help in this matter

Math Olympics- We will be holding a fun Math event on Tuesday, Nov 24. Students will be working in multiage groupings doing fun math activities.

PEANUT BUTTER– There are many children in our school with severe peanut allergies.  It is necessary to impose a ban on peanut butter in sandwiches, cookies and other sweets.  Thank you for your cooperation regarding this matter.  We are a PEANUT FREE SCHOOL.

NUTRITION POLICY – The District Education Council has developed a Nutrition Policy which was fully implemented on January 1, 2006.  This policy ensures that all schools have a strategy to provide students with access to healthy food choices at school.  The vending machine that is in the cafeteria is there mainly for the benefit of outside groups who use the building and often is out of order. Please do no rely on this for drinks for your child.  Students are only permitted to purchase the water or the 100% fruit juice. This policy is to help students make healthy choices and they are asking that parents help with this by thinking about Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy eating when preparing lunches. We are asking that pop or mini sips not be sent in lunches as they have no nutritional value. We try to send home the food your child does not want to eat so that you are aware of what they are eating.  Please monitor how much you send as sometimes food is wasted. Please make sure whatever you send can be opened by your child. Ex: Oranges need to be peeled and split for them. The boxed lunchables, although they look appealing are often wasted by students and are seen half eaten in the garbage. The school has nutritious food on hand to provide students with food to eat if they arrive without breakfast or a lunch.  We will only provide healthy nutritious choices to the students.

MILK PROGRAM – Chocolate and white milk is provided at school. To keep things simple, students will pay for their milk for the month. A separate notice is included regarding dates and prices for the months ahead. We have to place our order on Thursdays so need to have all money on Wednesdays. Please hold on to this notice. YOU MAY PAY FOR LONGER PERIODS IF YOU WISH.

BUS TRANSPORTATION – The district has changed their policy for transporting students and they will only transport students to the same location every day.  If you need a form for alternate transportation such as pick up at your home in the morning and delivery to a babysitter after school please ask your teacher for the Alternate Transportation form. District Office will not allow us to accept notes from parents requesting for the student to go to their friend’s house after school. There are no exceptions to this rule.

PARKING – Please do not drop off students at the front door of the school as this is the drop off for the buses only. Please do not park on Lakeview Drive as the Crossing Guard cannot cross the children safely with cars parked along this road.  Vehicles MUST park in the back lot and come into the building from there. You are not permitted to park in the TRAFFIC CIRCLE at the back of the school as again this is not safe for children who are getting dropped off. This is strictly a DROP OFF zone only. There are parking spaces behind the fence if you need to come in.

These rules are for the safety of your children. I thank you for your cooperation.

Teachers will ask you to move your car if you are in violation of these rules.

SCHOOL WEB SITE – The school has its own web site.  You can visit this at lakewoodheights.nbed.nb.ca.  You will find a lot of information here including the monthly newsletter as well as a monthly calendar.

SECRETARY’S HOURS – Mrs. Fran Bass is our secretary.  She works 31 hours a week from 8:30 – 3:15pm each day.

RECESS AND LUNCH BREAKS – All students are required to go outside during these times.  Many times children come to school without proper clothing on.  I ask for your help in seeing that appropriate clothing be worn to school throughout the school year.

SICK CHILDREN – If your child is sick and will not be in school please call us to let us know.  When a child becomes ill or injured at school we will try to make him/her comfortable and we will call you to make you aware of the situation.  You may be asked to come and take your child home, so it is very important that the teachers have alternate numbers for calling during these situations.  The demands of the teacher make it almost impossible to care adequately for children who are sent to school sick so please do not send sick children to school.  If your child has medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, severe allergies or any other conditions where special medication is involved, please inform the school so that we can make all staff aware.

TALK MAIL – Talk Mail will resume as soon as the phone numbers for the new families have been entered into the system.  I cannot express how valuable this service is to us.  This is an excellent way to stay in contact with the home at a moments notice.  I use this on a regular basis to inform you of important matters at school.  If you do not have this I strongly encourage you to call Aliant to set this up.  It costs you nothing to receive your messages from school. We realize if you have Rogers you will not receive these messages.

TERRY FOX RUN – Friday, September 25, the children will take part in our own walk for the Terry Fox National School Run Day. We are asking the children bring in any donations during that week in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.

PREMIER SCHOOL AGENDAS – The lesson book is used for Grades 3, 4, & 5.  The teachers find this an excellent way to enhance communication between school and home.  The cost of the book is $7.00

HOT LUNCH PROGRAM – The Home and School looks after the Hot Lunch program at the school. It will be offered four days a week and all orders must be placed by Friday of the previous week. We will send home items and prices in the near future.

SCHOOL RULES – You will see our Code of Conduct below.  Please review this with your child.  Our aim is for Lakewood Heights School to be a safe place for children.  We do not want to have any physical fighting at our school.  There are always teachers on duty and children should always feel safe.  I tell them if they are in a dark alley and feel their life is in danger they may need to protect themselves but we really feel there is no need to fight at school in order to solve their problems on the school grounds.  All students will receive training on Bullying and how to handle this but we strongly encourage all parents to contact us if they feel there are any problems with Bullying.  We ask for your cooperation regarding this matter.

Code of Conduct

                                  I am responsible

                                  I am prepared

                                  I am respectful

                                  I am safe

Please call the school if you have any questions or concerns.  Although the teachers are not able to speak to you while they are teaching, they will return your phone calls at the end of the day.

HOCKEY – Lakewood School has a hockey team and all students from Grades 2-5 are invited to join. We have several fathers who form the coaching team.  Mr. Peter Woytiuk has indicated he will head up the team.  The cost for registration will be around $40.00. There will be one game on Saturdays at the LBR.  I have lots of information to send to you regarding School Hockey and if your child shows an interest I will send the information home to you.  Please note:  All students must have accident insurance and any student registered with Minor Hockey at any level is not permitted to play in the school program.  All adult volunteers must have a criminal check that I will keep on file in the office.

Please return this form by September 18 if you would like the information package on School Hockey.

CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS- We will be collecting Campbell Soup labels at school. We are able to purchase educational materials from this.

SCENT FREE SCHOOL- Many public places are now scent free. All schools are scent free and students are not permitted to wear perfume products.

CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES- In support of the policy from the district office on the use of cell phones and other electronic devices Lakewood Heights School is asking that students do not bring these items to school. School District officials believe that maintaining the integrity of the learning environment is a priority and that the use of cell phones and/ or electronic devices might detract from that priority.

HOME AND SCHOOL- The first meeting will be held on September 23 at 7:30 in the library immediately following the Open House. Home and School will be looking for many people to assist. Lunch helpers are needed on Tues to Friday. The district has made it mandatory that all volunteers must have a Criminal Records check done and filed at the school. The form is included at the end.

SCHOOL CALENDAR-  Please keep the  attached calendar handy indicating the days and dates for the school year.

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 23rd for the OPEN HOUSE at Lakewood Heights School. See you at 6:30.

Please note there is NO SCHOOL  on Thursday and Friday October 8 and 9th as these are District Based Professional Development Days for all schools in District 08.

KEEPING OUR SCHOOLS SAFE- Please read the brochure and letter regarding Student Threat/Risk Assessment. Safety is the number one concern at all schools. During the day the only door that is open is the front door. Students who arrive late must enter through the front only. Doors are unlocked at recess and lunch time. All parents must report to the office when picking up their child early from school.

NATIONAL ANTHEM- Effective September 2009 District 8 schools will be required to implement the playing of the National Anthem.

H1N1 FLU VIRUS- With the flu season approaching, schools have been encouraged to continue:

  • Promoting good routine hygiene such as frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes
  • Encouraging students and staff to stay home when ill and seek medical attention as necessary; and
  • Maintaining vigilance in cleaning of the school environment as per infection control practices.

PHOTOGRAPHING STUDENTS FORM- Please read and sign the form indicating whether you will allow your child to be photographed. Our main use is for the slide show at the end of the year but occasionally local photographers are invited to events and students are photographed.
